Amish Furniture – A Tradition in Handmade Craftsmanship

Image : http://www.flickr.com

It’s widely known that the Amish make high-quality solid wood furniture that’s also beautiful. They use only solid wood, so the furniture they create is durable and strong, and lasts for many generations. They use the best quality wood, true, but their workmanship is also unsurpassed in today’s modern mass-market world of factory-produced furniture. These high-quality products are made not just as a principle of personal pride, but because the Amish believe they worship God through their actions.

The Amish take great care when they choose the wood for each particular project.  Quartersawn oak and oak are predominantly the types of wood used in constructing most pieces of furniture, but they also use pine, cedar, black walnut, hickory, maple and cherry. The Amish prefer oak because it has beautiful grain lines and a honey color. It is also widely used in the United States and Canada. Cherry is used for Queen Anne style furniture. Cedar, too, is used because its fresh, clean scent lends itself well to furniture used for storage. Hickory and maple are both lightly colored and extremely hard, which make them another popular choice for furniture.

Amish furniture has some well-recognized styles, including Queen Anne, Shaker, and Mission. These can be ornately carved or artfully simple. Other styles are Beachfront, Cottage, Rustic, Southwestern, West Lake, Royal Mission, Modesto, McCoy, Rio Grande, Spring Hill, Shaker Hill, Hampton, Carlisle, Bunker Hill, Bavarian, Contemporary, or Traditional/Heritage. Amish woodworkers from Indiana and Lancaster communities make most of the furniture, and styles can vary from region to region. Each woodworker also has his own personal touches to add, so that each piece is completely unique.

Amish furniture can be bought for any room in the house, including the home office, dining room, kitchen, living room, and bedroom. Most popularly made are dining room tables, dressers, and beds. There are also matching sets available for distinctive statements within each room. Heirloom quality rocking chairs and baby cribs are also available and unique. Amish furniture includes something for absolutely everyone. Outdoor furniture has recently become an option as a new trend emerges on the scene.

The Amish themselves still shun electricity for most uses, but do use diesel generators to run hydraulic or pneumatic power tools so that they can construct and mold their fine furniture pieces.

This is not in contrast to their belief system. While electricity is controlled and supplied by the outside world, and against their belief system, the Amish control the diesel generators, thus to use them does not contradict their beliefs. Because they can work more quickly with this type of power, they have more time to complete the fine detail work that they still must do by hand. The wood used for each piece of furniture is carefully chosen so that wood grains and colors work together to create an aesthetically pleasing effect.

Once an older son completes his formal schooling, his father takes him into training and teaches him everything about woodworking and its intricacies, so that the expertise is passed on to the next generation.

Until recently, Amish furniture was only available in local stores or antique shops. Today, though, many of these stores offer online shopping to consumers so that Amish furniture is now accessible to everyone. This type of process is done through “English” (non-Amish) business intermediaries who buy directly from the Amish and then establish and manage a physical storefronts or online stores for them.

Antiques – Wood Basics

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Oak, mahogany, walnut, pine, rosewood, maple, elm; you may have some or all of these woods in your home. But, do you know how to tell the difference among them? In this month’s column, we’ll talk about the different kinds of wood that are regularly seen in antique furniture and some common decorative treatments.

The Basics

Wood is hard or soft. When I say hard, I mean that the wood is dense, whereas, a soft wood is supple. A good trick to tell the difference between hard and soft wood is that if you press your fingernail into a soft wood such as pine, it leaves an indentation. But, this does not happen with a hard wood such as oak.

Wood is coarse-grain or close-grain. In coarse-grain wood, the age rings in the wood are far a part, giving it an uneven appearance. In close-grain woods, the age rings in the wood are very close together, giving it a smooth, delicate appearance.

Sometimes, wood is stained. Lighter woods such as oak, elm and maple can be stained to resemble a darker mahogany or rosewood.

Some woods (mahogany, rosewood, burl walnut) are perceived to be more valuable than other woods (elm, maple, spruce). The reason for this is availability. Woods that need to be imported are more expensive than home-grown woods. Woods that are abundant are not as expensive as woods that are scarce.

Oak

Oak is a coarse-grain hard wood found in Europe and North America. Starting in 17th century Europe, oak was used to make furniture found throughout the home. There are several varieties including red oak and white oak. Young oak is pale in color. But, over time and with polishing, oak darkens into a rich brown color.

Mahogany

Mahogany is a close-grain hard wood native to northern and central South America and the West Indies. Mahogany was a popular choice in England during the mid-18th century for fine furniture making. It is a dark red color sometimes, however, it is dark brown. Red mahogany is found in the West Indies and brown mahogany is native to South America. Mahogany furniture continues to be desirable today.

Rosewood

Rosewood is a close-grain hard wood indigenous to India, South America and the West Indies. Rosewood is named for the rose scent that releases when it is cut. Occasionally, I find that people confuse rosewood and mahogany. Both woods can be red in color. However, when you look closely at rosewood, you’ll see fine black (and sometimes white) rings that are not present in mahogany. Another trick to tell if an item is rosewood is to pick it up. Rosewood is a very heavy wood, heavier than mahogany. In the 17th century China, rosewood was a popular choice for fine furniture makers. As well, in 19th century Europe, it was used to construct better-quality furniture for fine homes.

Walnut

Walnut is close-grain hard wood found in Europe and North America. The color varies from light to a very rich golden brown color and it is not uncommon to find walnut stained to look like mahogany. Sometimes, disease leads to the unexpected. Burl walnut, the most prized form of walnut, results from a disease that attacks the tree causing a beautiful scrolled, close-grain. These days you see the look of burl walnut replicated in the plastic interiors of some higher end cars.

Pine

Pine is a pale, knotted soft wood with a wide, straight grain. It grows in Europe and North America. Pine was often used in furniture intended to be painted. Everyday furniture – kitchen tables and chairs -were often made from pine.

Maple & Elm

Maple and elm are coarse-grain hard woods found in North America and Europe. They were frequently used in utilitarian furniture. Often a veneer of a finer wood was applied to these woods.

Veneers

Veneering is a technique where a very thin sheet of a more expensive wood is glued to a less expensive wood. Using less expensive woods such as elm and maple and adding a more expensive mahogany or walnut veneer allowed furniture makers to provide furniture that was affordable for a larger clientele. You may hear an antique dealer say; “This table is walnut on maple.” The dealer means that the item has a walnut veneer and underneath the actual item is maple. A walnut on maple table is less valuable than a solid walnut table.

How do you tell if your furniture is veneered? Look at the edges of the piece. If you see what appears to be a seam, it is veneered. On the other hand, if the edges of the piece are seamless, it is solid.

Early veneers from the 17th century were hand-cut, so they could be uneven. But, in the 19th century veneers started to be cut by machine. This allowed the veneers to be cut very thin and even. Depending on the way the wood is cut, veneering produces different effects. Butterfly veneering occurs when two opposing end grain veneers are diagonally cut from a branch. They are applied to mirror each other.

Marquetry/Parquetry/Inlay

Marquetry is a technique where various kinds of wood are applied to a surface to produce a picture. Flowers and birds were often the subjects. Exotic woods such as ebony, satinwood and tulipwood were frequently employed.

The difference between marquetry and parquetry is the subject matter. Parquetry is a veneer that uses geometric patterns. Nowadays, you see it in parquet hardwood floors and ornate chess and backgammon boards.

Inlay is a decorative treatment where materials other than wood are cut into a design. Inlays were often made of bone, ivory, mother of pearl, brass, tortoise shell. Marquetry, parquetry and inlay first appeared during the Italian Renaissance.

Gilding

Gilding is a technique wherein gold leaf is applied with gesso (a plaster-like substance) to wood. It is highly decorative and was popular during the Italian Renaissance and the Louis period in France.

Maple Table Choosing the Right Wood for Turning

maple table

Maple table

Maple table

I have responsibility husky educe my held key and the subsequent to the buoyancy of a few pieces appropriate wood prairie interview. Everything that I knew was that I wanted some appropriate hardwood for turning and that are not affected had to match the adjust ripened.

For me, this period of time, all skin tones tried similar but exhausted purchase parts lots are available formed my persuasion on the requirements of activation; perhaps learn is much more quickly from the your errors. I have certainly. A huge advantage of shooting is that we we need may not impose prepared for us wood and all sorts of get – promised cut act as positioned on the primary use.

Virtually any wood is suitable for turning in particular Maple, sycamore, walnut, beech, oak or any other hardwoods tough with close and fine grain.

Walnut is, in theory, answers wood, all needs in aspect and the temperament and used by passing through the real is ghiotto for enable genuine and polishing obvious. A simple Polish development will quickly give a beautiful finish.

(D) ‘ Furthermore, oak is very difficult to handle and different species vary considerably texture. American oak works and that ends well, but sometimes it is difficult to match the pink colour. French oak is very difficult and that ends well, but is sometimes rather open grainé and requires a lot of fill.

Sycamore, Maple and beech shoot very well, with beautiful chip long from your gouge and ULMIA. Sycamore and beech will are probably color so clear but Maple is preferable natural colour.

It may have provided for you, wood, who was in the oven dry; i.e., wood is cut to various thicknesses and stacked in a heated room for a period laid down in advance, so as to lead to progressive SAP from the heat and humidity prolonged. From time to time the wood in the oven is selected for moisture content, and when he has been abandoned at the desired level, wood is removed and outside are stacked in the air.

Maple table some ovens are not handled correctly and wood is wasted, although externally wood seems straight. However, in Cup in a 2-inch square, for example, you can probably find large enough divides precisely at the heart of the wood.

For this reason, it is best to use air – dry wood and even if the dressing is much more long period, the resulting wood points are much better. Air drying, the structure is divided into spread adapted and stacked one on top of other with small pens between each spread so that flow air. The drying time is counted as approximately twelve months per inch thickness, then a beam 3 inch would like three years.

During this period may be reduced if wood points are cut finish to size, i.e. in 2 or 3 squares of 7 x 1 inch inches or cards. When the cards are cut into squares, they are typically stacked in short lengths and what are more appropriate for the resumption of the table legs etc… Each square of the stack typically performs the date has been cut out, is very easy to say when it is properly seasoned. In this case, you can count on six months per inch for maturing time.

To avoid the separation and eventually during stirring dressing, wood end must be painted with tar or wax. I hope that it can give you an idea of what to do if you have some timber sawn fresh your store.

Court – wood grainé should be avoided, if possible. Enough it is easily recognizable by the grain running diagonally on the map of sciée. For some forms of carpentry would be very important, but when an item is activated, the grain should run in the direction of length reasonably directly or in case contrary, finite element will be weak and easily broken. Moreover, it retains its original form.

Put On A Happy Kitchen Cabinet Face

Image : http://www.flickr.com

In its Lifestyle SCENE section, The Sacramento Bee recently took on a homeowner’s kitchen cabinet dilemma. The reader wrote in and asked the newspaper what could be done about the dark wood kitchen cabinets she was sick of looking at. She specifically pointed out the dings and scratches that had marred her kitchen cabinets but also mentioned the embedded fingerprints that no amount of scrubbing seemed to remove.

It seemed a complete kitchen makeover was in order, but maybe, just maybe, there was another-a better-option available. Getting right down to the nitty gritty, the reader wanted to know: “My cousin suggested that refacing them (her kitchen cabinets) would be a lot less expensive than buying new cabinets…. I also haven’t been very impressed with the looks of the refaced (kitchen) cabinets advertised in fliers I’ve seen. Could (kitchen cabinet) refacing give us something different than the standard look of oak, maple or cherry?

The Sacramento Bee’s kitchen remodeling experts weren’t shy in offering a resounding YES to refacing the homeowner’s kitchen cabinets as a solution to her dilemma. The article explained and lauded kitchen cabinet refacing in this way: “The process, which applies new wood or laminate veneer over existing cabinetry and adds custom doors and drawer fronts to match, enables you to keep your existing countertops, if you choose. It also helps save the environment by not throwing perfectly good wood cabinets into a landfill.”

It went on to point out that the process of refacing kitchen cabinets “begins by removing and discarding the old doors, drawer fronts, hinges and trim. Next, 1/4-inch wood or laminate veneers are bonded to all exterior surfaces of the cabinets. Finally, new doors, drawer fronts, semi- concealed hinges and new trim, as necessary, are installed.”

So, for the homeowner who is considering kitchen cabinet refacing, it makes sense to look for a manufacturer of kitchen cabinets whose inventory includes a selection of wood door styles, finishes and decorative cabinet hardware.

The best kitchen cabinet refacing manufacturers will give you the natural beauty and durability of a natural wood species base like maple, hickory, oak, cherry and birch. But they’ll also provide you with a variety of colorful wood finishes to brighten the kitchen and add a pop of decorator color to the room. And for those who want to add a real designer touch to their kitchen, a reputable kitchen cabinet refacing manufacturer will also have a variety of door styles and shapes from which to choose.

Kitchen cabinet refacing offers the best of all worlds. According to The Sacramento Bee, not only is it “the quickest, most economical and efficient way to completely transform your cabinets,” but “many colors and door styles in laminates and natural oak, maple, alder or cherry wood in a variety of stains are available.”

When you’re getting the kitchen of your dreams while saving scads of money in the process, it’s easy to put on a happy face … both on your kitchen and yourself. That’s why kitchen cabinet refacing can be the cost-conscious homeowner’s best redecorating friend.
